Course Introduction

Course Modules

History Year 1: reading, writing and seeing history; independent history research project. Optional modules: living and dying in Europe 1000'1600; introduction to the Americas; politics and revolution (Europe 1789'1871); introduction to ancient history. Year 2: histories. Optional modules: intermediate seminar study; work placement; politics, society and religion in the late roman empire; polite and plebeian: material life, violence and power in 18th'century London; Latin American revolutions; British society in war and peace, 1880'1950; sex, lies and cheap print: politics, culture and society in England, 1660'1714; crime and punishment in England, 1750'1900; Germany, 1871'1945: Kaiser Reich, republic and 3rd Reich; crisis and conquest in medieval Britain 1066'1215; Sparta; the politics of sex and the body in Europe, 1880'1914; the ancient city of Rome (study trip to Rome); the Roehampton campus project. Year 3: dissertation; special essay. Optional modules: culture, gender and sexuality in the nineteenth century; work placement 2; romans and barbarians; Islam and women; Cuba (society, culture and struggle since 1898); themes in post'war British politics, society and culture; mind, body and the challenge of modernity, 1800'1918; radicalism in the English revolution, 1640'1653; world war 1 (100 years on); prosperity and violence in the age of the Vikings c. 870'1030; Demosthenes and the rhetoric of power; histories of childhood in Europe, 1850'1945; histories of 'home' in Britain, 1600'1850; crime stories; merchants and goods on the move (trade in the roman empire); magic and politics c. 1550 ' c. 1700. Philosophy Year 1: classical philosophy; philosophy, critical thinking and logic; modern philosophy. Year 2: metaphysics and mind; moral and political philosophy. Optional modules: aesthetics; philosophy of religion; epistemology; Indian philosophy and religion. Year 3: dissertation; contemporary political philosophy; philosophy of science; philosophy of the social sciences; Wittgenstein; Marxism; continental philosophy; philosophy of language.
