Course Introduction

This distinctive programme provides enormous flexibility for you to customise your degree according to your linguistic and cultural interests. You will combine the study of up to three foreign languages with a focus in a chosen area of cultural studies: cultural history; film studies; history of art; linguistics or literary studies.

Course Modules

In Year 1 all students take two languages on an equal basis, one from beginners level; follow a core course introducing a wide range of concepts, theories and methods, which are applied to relevant cultural and linguistic courses. The languages studied may be chosen from: Czech, Danish, Dutch, French, German, Ancient Greek, Hebrew, Hungarian, Icelandic, Italian, Latin, Norweigan, Polish, Romanian, Russian, Serbian, Croatian, Spanish, Swedish and Yiddish. Bulgarian, Finnish, Slovak and Ukrainian may be taken as the minor language. At the start of Year 2; students select the cultural studies pathway they would like to pursue from: Film studies; linguistics, history of art; cultural history and literary studies including comparative literature. Year 3 is spent abroad in a country where the student's main language is spoken.
