Course Introduction

A central London based degree to help you attain a proficiency in speaking, writing and reading French and German, whilst developing your knowledge and critical understanding of the culture and society of both countries. The year abroad is usually split between French and German'speaking countries.

Course Modules

Year 1 examples: Core French language; introduction to French literature (compulsory); core German language; German language extension course I; translation from and into German I; die sprech'stunde. Year 2 examples: Core French language; the practice of translation (compulsory); core German language; death and desire (love in French literature before 1700); writing the self since 1700 in French literature. Year 3: Year abroad. Year 4 examples: Core French language; Core German language; the stylistics of translation; medieval occitan literature; the debate about women in the middle ages; 16th'century encounters with the new world.
