Course Introduction

This stream provides a foundation for the understanding of health services management by drawing on a wide range of academic disciplines and enables students to develop knowledge, understanding and capability in various scientific methods and fields of study relevant to strategic management; the stream is aimed at health service managers, planners and policy'makers or those who plan a career in these fields from high', middle' and low'income countries; by the end of this stream students should be able to demonstrate ability to apply knowledge of the core disciplines of public health, consisting of statistics, epidemiology, health economics and social research, to real global health problems.

Course Modules

Core modules include: health services; basic epidemiology; basic statistics for public health and policy; introduction to health economics; principles of social research; organisational management; integrating module (health services management). Optional modules include: environment, health and sustainable development; health policy, process and power; health promotion theory; issues in public health; drugs, alcohol and tobacco; economic analysis for health policy; health care evaluation; health promotion approaches and methods; sociological approaches to health; analytical models for decision making; conflict and health; family planning programmes; health systems; history and health; population, poverty and environment; qualitative methodologies; applied communicable disease control; control of reproductive tract infections / sexually transmitted infections; economic evaluation; medical anthropology and public health.

Course Additional Entry

2nd Class Honours degree of a recognised UK university; or an overseas qualification of an equivalent standard; applicants require some ability in maths post'16 year education; preference will be given to applicants with relevant work experience; applicants with an appropriate technical qualification are also welcomed; applicants without these entry requirements but with relevant professional experience may be eligible for admission.
