Course Introduction

This programme provides an opportunity to study and enjoy some of the great literatures of the world, including a range of works from the Middle Ages to the present day. Popular literature courses, such as 'Postcolonial Literatures in English', 'American Literature' and 'Drama since 1860' reflect global approaches to English studies in the 21st century.

Modules include: Explorations in literature 1; explorations in literature 2; approaches to text; renaissance comedy: Shakespeare and Jonson; literature of the later middle ages; renaissance and restoration; Augustans and romantics; Victorians; moderns; Plato to Pater; varieties of language in conversation and literature; reading women's writing; Shakespeare; the novel; modern American literature; 19th'century American literature; drama since 1860; Irish literature in English from 1800 to the present day; empire and literature; post'colonial literatures in English; modern literary theory; romanticism; advanced personal study.
