Course Introduction

Attain a high level of proficiency in German, and develop knowledge and understanding of the culture and society. You may also choose from a diverse and comprehensive choice of English modules. The degree is based in central London and includes a year in a German'speaking country.

Course Modules

Year 1 examples: German language extension I; translation from and into German I; die sprechstunde (oral language class); aspects of language; classical and biblical contexts of English literature; introducing literary theories. Year 2 examples: Politics and everyday life in 20th century Germany; society, politics and popular culture in Germany after 1870; Germany since 1945 (politics, society, economics); a mad world, my masters (performing culture in Jacobean London); Australian literature and film; creative writing (the novel). Year 3: Year abroad. Year 4 examples: Society, politics and popular culture in Germany; Germany since 1945 (politics, society and economics); extended essay; ancient lyric and poetry; autobiography and modern self'representation; Beowulf (heroes and other monsters).
