### Course Introduction

This programme offers a variant of the advanced study offered in the Physics BSc. You will develop an advanced understanding of the theoretical structure of the core topics in physics, and the programme is likely to appeal to you if you have a strong interest and ability in mathematics. It offers an additional year of study on top of the Theoretical Physics BSc, during which students have the opportunity to specialise further by taking advanced optional courses, and undertaking a research project.

### Course Modules

Year 1: Classical mechanics; wave motion, optics and acoustics; electricity and magnetism; modern physics; astronomy and cosmology; thermal physics; mathematics for physics; practical skills (includes: experimental physics, computer skills and programming, data analysis, project work). Year 2: Electromagnetic waves and relativity; quantum physics; physics of the solid state; atomic and molecular physics; mathematical methods in physics; options (from mathematics; communication of scientific ideas; modern languages; history and philosophy of science; options from other degrees taught within the Department or courses from other departments). Year 3: Group project; theoretical physics (topics in electromagnetic and quantum theory); statistical and solid state physics; nuclear and particle physics; options (from further mathematical methods, applied physics, astronomy, medical physics or space science options; 1 may be from the list of options for 4th year). Year 4: Major project (of a design, computing, theoretical or mathematical nature); options: 3 units from half unit modules from the physics (MSci) list including: condensed matter physics; experimental particle physics; particle physics theory; atomic and molecular physics; nuclear physics; mathematics; analytical mechanics; analytical mechanics; non'linear systems and chaos; advanced statistical mechanics; advanced quantum mechanics; plasma physics. Students may also choose from courses offered in other MSci degree lists.
