UK student visa information
International students from outside the UK or EU must apply for a student visa. Eligibility is calculated using a points-based system called a Tier 4 Student Visa.
Remember, you can only apply for a visa once you have been given a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (see below).
UPDATE: New UK student visa rules
The UK government is introducing new visa regulations to prevent bogus colleges from recruiting international students. Read more about the changes at the UKBA website.
UK student visa rules - a basic introduction
You need 40 points to apply for a student visa. This is achieved by:
- Receiving a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) from a university approved by the UK Border Agency (UKBA), also known as a 'Tier 4 sponsor' (30 points).
From April 2012, all universities must be a 'Highly Trusted Sponsor (HTS)' otherwise they cannot sponsor international students. - Providing evidence of funding to pay for both your course tuition fees and your monthly living costs (10 points).
Tuition fees can range from £4,000-£22,000. You will also need at least £800 for each month of your studies to pay for living costs.
Visit the UK Border Agency to check the full eligibility criteria for a UK study visa . You can also read further guidance on the UKCISA website.
Tip - It is very important that you do not travel to the UK without a valid student visa. Visit the UK Border Agency website or contact the British Embassy or Consulate in your country for advice.
